OUR FACILITIES
Apart from thorough neurological consultation and examination, the following specialist investigations are available at NeuroKids with prior appointment only.
EEG
Electroencephalogram is the recording of electrical activity of the brain. It is a supportive investigation in children with fits/faints/funny turns. It is preferably done awake in older children, but in younger children we may have to give medicines to make them sleep
so that we can do the recording successfully. Children may be asked to breathe deeply (hyperventilation) and we may also flash lights in front of their eyes during the recording, these are routine procedures to get adequate information.
VIDEO-EEG
In selected cases, simultaneous review of the video and the electrical recording of the brain during that time gives invaluable information. This may require stay for a few hours and can be done only if the child is having frequent episodes.
NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES/EMG
Children who are weak, or have difficulty walking may require examination of their muscles and nerves. In nerve conduction tests, we give small electrical currents on the various nerves and check if the nerve is conducting and functioning well.
This procedure is not painful, but younger children may be apprehensive and we may need to make them sleep. In some cases, we may need to electromyography (EMG) where a very thin needle is inserted into selected muscles to get more information. This procedure is uncomfortable, not painful, and we use creams or sprays to numb the skin and distraction techniques whilst doing the procedure.
VISUAL EVOKED POTRNTIAL(VEP)
This is a useful test to see how the information gets communicated between the eye and the brain. In this test, flashing lights or checker boards are shown to the child, and electrical activity is recorded from the back of the head.
SOMATOSENSORY EVOKED POTENTIAL (SSEP)
This is a useful test to look for integrity between the nerves, spinal cord and the brain. It is useful in spinal cord lesions and is often requested by a specialist professional. In this tests, electrical currents are given to the nerves and we look at how this information is conducted to the spinal cord and the to the brain.
